Katie Chaplin
I am a textile artist specialising in Japanese crafts. The question everyone asks is "how on earth did you get involved in all this?!" Well, as far back as I can remember I have always been fascinated by Oriental culture; growing up in the Yorkshire Dales it was about as far removed as I could get!
I began exhibiting my Japanese-inspired silk paintings in 2003 and this led on to studying kimono, Japanese culture and other crafts in more depth. My first trip to Japan was in 2005 and I tried to learn as much as possible in those few weeks from the wonderful people I met. I was helped a great deal by WAK Japan, a women's association based in Kyoto who arrange lessons for foreigners. They were invaluable in arranging bespoke courses for me and gave me contacts I could never have found by myself.
Back in the UK I launched a series of craft kits based on what I'd learnt and began teaching craft workshops. The kits and workshops are carefully designed to ensure that each participant can create something beautiful without any prior skill or knowledge. I also began 'upcycling' vintage kimono fabrics in earnest, making handbags, cushions and jewellery which is now sold in galleries throughout the UK. Several times a year I exhibit these alongside the craft supplies at major shows.
During subsequent trips to Japan I have made many close friends, a lot of whom work in traditional industries, for example a kimono dresser, obi weaver, paper artist, koto player etc. Each one in turn has put me in touch with other contacts so that now I am able to arrange lessons or experiences in almost any part of Japanese culture.
My main work now involves being a public speaker and tutor. In 2009 I was approached by Ideal World to demonstrate and sell my craft kits on their 'Create and Craft' shopping channel, which has now become a regular event.
I also offer a consultation service which can encompass anything from an hour's dressing in kimono for a party, to a fully escorted trip to Japan. Please contact me by email katie@japancrafts.co.uk or telephone 01748 836633 to discuss your requirements.
