Although the kimono is not shaped to fit the body as Western clothes are, it can be made to fit a person's height, and the narrow panels can be let in or out to fit different sizes. Thus the same kimono can be worn by different people if it is taken apart and adjusted. Of course, this requires a considerable amount of time and skill and is just not practical for most kimono that I buy second hand. My penchant for early 20th century kimono means that most are far too short and will never fit me properly (Japanese ladies were much shorter 100 years ago!), so I have to fudge it a bit when I wear them. My feeling is, it's more important to wear kimono that I love - I'm going to buy them anyway, so wearing them 'fudged' is better than having them gather dust in a drawer. Also, to my customers, the beauty of seeing the kimono being worn is a real treat, and they wouldn't know enough detail to realise that I should have ohashori etc ("ohash-what?". Exactly.).
So one option is to buy a kimono bolt and have it tailored, or learn to sew it yourself (which is another of my dreams...). This is not a cheap option, as you are essentially commissioning someone to weave 12m of fabric, then commissioning someone else to sew it up. I saw this man weaving indigo kasuri kimono bolts in 2013 - the ones behind the loom started at about £3,000 (and he let me have a go!!!).
Eventually, though, I spotted a beauty on the most well-known vintage kimono site in the world, Ichiroya. Not as beautiful to me as the other one, but still, unusual and to my taste. Boyf had the idea that he would buy me the bolt for my birthday, and have it tailored as my Christmas present, lucky me!
The kimono tailor said I had to check the fabric with my own eyes before I sent it to her, so it had to be sent from Japan to the UK, then I'll take it back to Japan in my suitcase next month and hopefully pick it up as a kimono in the New Year.
It arrived in a protective sleeve with the manufacturer's name on, 'Yoshizawa'. I Googled 'kimono yoshizawa' and got a Japanese porn star, so it might be rather difficult to find more info on this company!
